How to Calculate Gas Mileage

The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, is the government agency responsible for rating new vehicles for their fuel economy. A lot of information goes into these ratings, but as disclaimers for them often say, your mileage may vary. If you’re looking for how to calculate gas mileage as you head around Myrtle Beach, the team at Hadwin-White Subaru is ready to help you! If you’re looking for a gas mileage calculator, we’ve got several ways of figuring that out. We’re your gas mileage experts!

Gas Mileage Calculator

It’s easy to learn how to calculate gas mileage in your car. This is what you should do:

  1. Visit your local Charleston gas station and fill up your gas tank to the maximum. Reset your trip odometer or record the exact mileage after refilling. Be sure you also find out the capacity of your gas tank by checking your owner’s manual.
  2. Drive your car around Columbia as you normally would. Note that if you accelerate more briskly or slowly or drive differently from normal, your “typical” calculated gas mileage might be different than what you record.
  3. Refill your tank and record your mileage. If you wait longer to refill, your calculation will be more accurate as it will be based on a more balanced mix of driving conditions.
  4. The easiest way to calculate your gas mileage is to simply divide the number of miles you drive by the number of gallons of gas your vehicle took to refill. In short, that the miles you drive divided by the number of gallons of gas used.
  5. If you forget to check how many gallons you filled up your car with, go by where your tank was when you refilled (like ¼ or ½), then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly to come to the number of gallons refilled. This might not be the most accurate way, however, since the gas gauge has some inaccuracies. With a digital gas gauge that shows how many gallons of gas are in the tank, this is a much easier way of doing things.
